Rules and Definitions for Competition

Amateur: 

An amateur level of competition. Amateurs may not compete in Rising Star Professional, or Professional  level competition, or as the Professional in a Pro-Am competition. 

Amateur level dancers may teach and receive payment for teaching or performing.

Amateur Intermediate Showcase: 

Amateur Intermediate Showcase is an entry level amateur division.  Should a dancer win Amateur  Intermediate Showcase 3 times in a dance style with a minimum of 3 competitors, they will no longer be  permitted to compete in Amateur Intermediate Showcase in that style in the future.  Intermediate  dancers can challenge Amateur Advanced Showcase as many times as they want, but if an Amateur  Intermediate dancer wins the Amateur Advanced division with a minimum of 3 competitors, and/or  makes the final with a minimum of 8 couples, they will no longer be permitted to compete in Amateur  Intermediate Showcase in that style.

Amateur Advanced Showcase: 

An advanced amateur level of showcase competition. There are no limits to how many times a dancer  can win Amateur Advanced Showcase.

Rising Star Professional: 

Rising Star is an entry level professional division. Once a dancer competes as a Rising Star Professional,  they can no longer compete as an amateur. Rising Star Professional dancers may partner an amateur in  the Pro-Am divisions. Rising Star Professionals may also compete in the Professional division. Should a  Rising Star professional win 3 competitions in a dance style with a minimum for 3 competitors, and/or  make the final with a minimum of 8 competitors, they will not be permitted to compete in Rising Star in  that style in the future. 

If a dancer wins Rising Star at an event in a style with a minimum of 3 competitors, they may not  compete in Rising Star again at the specific event, in that specific style.

Professional: 

Once a dancer competes as a Professional, they can no longer compete as an amateur. Professional  dancers may partner with an amateur in the Pro-Am divisions.  

​

Open: 

A competition division which is open to all levels, ages, and styles unless otherwise specified in the  division title. 

​

Pro-Am Ladies: 

A professional dancer dancing with an amateur lady, only the amateur is judged.

​

Pro-Am Men: 

A professional dancer dancing with an amateur man, only the amateur is judged. 

​

Showcase Divisions:   

Defined as a category whereby the partnership, solo dancer, or team showcases choreography, and  dances to the music of their choice.  

​

Heat (or just dance) Divisions:   

A category where all dancers dance together on the stage or floor to music that is selected by the  organization or deejay. Heats generally last 1- 1.5 minutes. This is a lead/follow division, rather than  choreographed, designed to show the ability to connect with one's partner and display timing,  musicality and creativity to whatever music is played. No lifts are permitted.

Solo:  

A competition of 1 dancer. 

​

Same Gender:  

Dancers of the same gender 

​

Shines Showcase:  

Shine categories may include tricks but may not include lead and follow patterns. 

​

Cabaret:  

May include lifts, tricks, and must include at least 50% recognizable dance (example 50% Salsa dance in  Salsa Cabaret)  

​

Non-Cabaret:  

Must include 80% recognizable dance for that style (example 80% Salsa in a Salsa showcase division).  Both dancers should maintain a connection with the floor with a part of their body if assisted. Dancers  who exceed the above requirements in Non-Cabaret divisions will have a penalty applied to their score  of 10% of their overall score. 

Showcase division which do not state Cabaret, Non-Cabaret, On1 or On2:  

Lifts and tricks are permitted, but not mandatory.

Team:  

3 or more dancers

​

17 and under:  

All dancers must be 17 years of age or under on the day of the competition to compete in this division.

  

Over 40:  

All dancers must be 40 years of age or older on the day of the competition to compete in this division. 

​

Showcase Music:  

May be no less than 1.5 minutes and no more than 2.5 minutes long. Teams between 1.5 minutes and 3  minutes. This includes optional entrance and/or exit music.  Dancers will have no more than 20 seconds  to get into place for performance.  Any choreography prior to the beginning of the music will be counted  

toward the overall timing of the performance.  Likewise, dancers will have a maximum of 20 seconds at the conclusion of the performance to exit the floor. 

Props are not allowed in showcase divisions.

Mega Team: 

- Description- This is a new division never before seen in the Salsa world. This division must be a  minimum of 60% Salsa moves and can be a fusion of 40% of any other genre of dancing. - Limits - There are no limits in this division. You may use props, tricks, as many people as you can  fit on stage, music changes, and more. 

- Scoring - You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and  your ability to be as creative as possible. Your ability to be creative and have a fusion will be  important. Originality is also extremely important. We want to see something new and  innovative not a watered down version of someone else’s style.

Guidelines: 

Beginner and Pre-Intermediate level heats:  

Dancers should not exceed 1.5 turns

Costumes:   

Costumes are not required but are highly recommended. All costumes should be in good taste

1. Mega Team:

Description- This is a new division never before seen in the Salsa world. This division must be a minimum of 60% Salsa moves and can be a fusion of 40% of any other genre of dancing. The music is open to what ever the competitor choices.  We want your creativity in this division. Think transitions, music changes, be more creative than you’ve ever been before, and push the limits.  We want you to embrace out of the box thinking without losing the core of salsa.  Each mind interprets salsa differently, let us see inside your mind.

Participants- There must be a minimum of 12 dancers and there is no limit with the amount of dancers that can be on stage.  Dancers can include: Professionals, Semi-Pros, Amateurs.  Age: 12 & Over.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. Your ability to be creative and have a fusion will be important. Originality is also extremely important. Entry Fees: $300.00 per Team

 2. Team Salsa Showcase:

Description- This is a team division only with Salsa music.

Participants- There must be a minimum of 6 dancers and a maximum of 12 dancers for this division.

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits to this division. You can do tricks, drops, splits, ect. in this division. We want to see what you have and push your creative limits.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $300.00 per Team

 

3. Team Bachata Showcase: 

Description- This is a team division only with Bachata music.

Participants- There must be a minimum of 6 people for this division

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits to this division. You can do tricks, drops, splits, ect. in this division.Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $300.00 per Team

4. Salsa Cabaret Showcase:

Description-This is a couples Salsa division with tricks, lifts, drops, splits, ect.

Participants- This division can be male and female dancing together or same gender dancing together.

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 1:30 (one minute and 40 seconds) and a maximum of 2:10 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do tricks, flips, lifts, drops, ect. in this division.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $150 per couple 

5. Salsa Showcase:

Description- This is a couples Salsa division with no cabaret tricks, lifts, or any acrobatics in the air.

Participants- This division can be male and female dancing together or same gender dancing together.

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 1:30 (one minute and 40 seconds) and a maximum of 2:10 minutes.

Limits- You cannot do any acrobatics in this division. This means at least one hand or foot for each person must be touching and connected to the floor when connected to your partner.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $150 per couple

6. Bachata Showcase:

Description- This is a Bachata couples division which means you can only use Bachata music. You are allowed to do acrobatics, lifts, tricks, drops, ect.

Participants- This division can be male and female dancing together or same gender dancing together.

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 1:30 (one minute and 40 seconds) and a maximum of 2:10 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do tricks, flips, lifts, drops, ect. in this division

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $150.00 per couple

7. Ladies Team Salsa Shine Showcase:

Description- This is a team division only with Salsa music.

Participants- There must be a minimum of 6 people for this division

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits to this division. You can do tricks, drops, splits, ect. in this division.Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $300.00 per Team

8. Men Team Salsa Shine Showcase:

Description- This is a team division only with Salsa music.

Participants- There must be a minimum of 6 people for this division

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits to this division. You can do tricks, drops, splits, ect. in this division.Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible.

9.Ladies Team Bachata Shine Showcase:

Description- This is a team division only with Bachata music.

Participants- There must be a minimum of 6 people for this division

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits to this division. You can do tricks, drops, splits, ect. in this division.Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible.

10.Ladies Salsa Solo Showcase:

Description- This is a female Salsa solo division. This means you can only use Salsa music.

Participants- This division is only for one female dancer.

Time- This routine should be at a minimum of 1 minute and no longer than 2 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do jumps, tricks, ect.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $100.00 per person

11. Mens Salsa Solo Showcase:

Description- This is a male Salsa solo division. This means you can only use Salsa music. We are looking for a Salsero.

Participants- This division is only for one male dancer.

Time- This routine should be at a minimum of 1 minute and no longer than 2 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do jumps, tricks, ect.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $100.00 per person

12. Mens Bachata Solo Showcase:

Description- This is a male Bachata  solo division. This means you can only use Bachata music. We are looking for a Bachatero.

Participants- This division is only for one male dancer.

Time- This routine should be at a minimum of 1 minute and no longer than 2 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do jumps, tricks, ect.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $100.00 per person

13. Ladies Bachata Solo Showcase:

Description- This is a female Bachata solo division. This means you can only use Bachata music. We are looking for a Bachatera.

Participants- This division is only for one female dancer.

Time- This routine should be at a minimum of 1 minute and no longer than 2 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do jumps, tricks, ect.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $100.00 per person

14.Pro-Am Ladies Salsa Showcase:

Description- This is a Salsa Professional & Amateur division. Which means one dancer must be a professional dancer which means they are a paid dancer and dance to make money. The other dancer must be an amateur dancer which means that dancer is not a paid dancer and does not make money as a dancer.

Participants- This division can be male and female dancing together or same gender dancing together.

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 1:30 (one minute and 40 seconds) and a maximum of 2:10 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do tricks, flips, lifts, drops, ect. in this division.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 
Entry Fees: $150.00 per couple

15. Pro-Am Mens Salsa Showcase:

Description- This is a Bachata Professional & Amateur division. Which means one dancer must be a professional dancer which means they are a paid dancer and dance to make money. The other dancer must be an amateur dancer which means that dancer is not a paid dancer and does not make money as a dancer.

Participants- This division can be male and female dancing together or same gender dancing together.

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 1:30 (one minute and 40 seconds) and a maximum of 2:10 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do tricks, flips, lifts, drops, ect. in this division.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do jumps, tricks, ect.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $100.00 per person.

23. Amateur Mens Salsa Solo Showcase:

Description- This is a male Salsa solo division. This means you can only use Salsa music. We are looking for a Salsero.

Participants- This division is only for one male dancer.

Time- This routine should be at a minimum of 1 minute and no longer than 2 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do jumps, tricks, ect.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $100.00 per person.

 

24. Ladies Salsa Solo Showcase 17 and under:

Description- This is a junior female Salsa solo division. This means you can only use Salsa music.

Participants- This division is only for one female dancer under the age of 16.

Time- This routine should be at a minimum of 1 minute and no longer than 2 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do jumps, tricks, ect.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $50.00 per person.

 

25. Mens Salsa Solo Showcase 17 and under:

Description- This is a junior male Salsa solo division. This means you can only use Salsa music. We are looking for a Salsero.

Participants- This division is only for one male dancer under the age of 16.

Time- This routine should be at a minimum of 1 minute and no longer than 2 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits in this division. You can do jumps, tricks, ect.

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $50.00 per person.

 

26. Amateur Salsa Showcase 17 and under:

Description- This is an amateur couples Salsa division. You can only use Salsa music. Both dancers must be amateurs and cannot make money dancing.

Participants- This division can be male and female dancing together or same gender dancing together.

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 1:30 (one minute and 40 seconds) and a maximum of 2:10 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits to this division. You can do tricks, drops, splits, ect. in this division. 

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible.

27. Amateur Team Salsa Showcase 17 and under:

Description- This is a junior salsa team division only with Salsa music.

Participants- There must be a minimum of 6 people and a maximum of 12 people for this division

Time- This routine must be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes.

Limits- There are no limits to this division. You can do tricks, drops, splits, ect. in this division. 

Scoring- You will be judged on technique, synchronization, timing, costumes, musicality, and your ability to be as creative as possible. 

Entry Fees: $200.00 per team+

All teams, couples, and soloist are encouraged to participate on both events.  Las Vegas Salsa Congress is the #1 Salsa Congress in the USA.  We pride ourselves in always having the best.  We require all competitors and performers that will be participating in both, to ensure separate choreography's.  We will not allow you to perform AND compete if you are planning to dance the same choreography.   

Passes and Fees:

Competitors must purchase a competitor pass + the fees for each division. Here are the scenarios for competitors.

1. If you are performing already at the Las Vegas Salsa Bachata Congress and paid your performers fee then you are only required to pay your $100 per person per division fee.

2. If you are not performing at the Las Vegas Salsa Bachata Congress then you must pay the performers fee of what rate it is during the time of purchase plus the $100 per person per division fee.

3. If you are participating in the Salsa/Mambo/Bachata Showdown then you will pay your Showdown fee plus the $100 per person per division fee.

4. If you are an invited performer, you will be required to pay the $100 per person per division fee.

Qualifying Dates and Finals:

All competitors are required to qualify on Wednesday June 29th, 2022 at the Tropicana hotel and Casino inside the Cohiba Ballroom. We will have a mandatory meet and greet at 9AM with judges, producers and talk about the vision of the competition.  We will take the top 4 finalists with the highest scores and they will then compete in the finals on Thursday June 29, 2023 from 12pm until we finish. Scores and Final Decisions:

All scores are final. Competitors are not allowed to ask for advice from the judges before or during the competition. All scores will be posted publicly. You will have the opportunity to consult the judges after the competition is over to ask for ways to improve, but not before or during the competition.  We want to have a transparent competition, where there are no controversies.  We are very proud to be getting the best judges we can have, to ensure the quality of the competition.

Timing:

If you dance On1 or On2 or On3 or On4 we ask that you stay on that count. YOU MUST BE CONSISTENT!!! There will be major point deductions for not being consistent on your timing.  We recommend that if you start your choreography On 1, it should end On 1.

Release of Liability:

All competitors are required to sign a release of liability due to injury at the event. You will release the

event, and it’s organizers from any injury liability.

Photography and Videos:

The Ultimate Latin Dance Championship and Sin City Salseros Dance Company LLC has full 100% rights to
all photographs, videos, and images at the ULDC. You are not allowed to film or photograph during
the competition. All participants are required to sign a release to use their videos, photographs, AND
personal information like names and biographies. All of the content recorded and filmed are property of
the Ultimate Latin Dance Championship and Sin City Salseros Dance Company LLC.

Refunds:

There will only be refunds due to injury and you must provide a Doctor’s note to us disclosing your injury. If there is a death in the family then you can also be issued a refund, but must provide proof.  Unfortunately we must ask for proof as bad as it sounds as there are people that will not be honest for the reason of cancelling.  Dancers that pull out last minute will not be awarded any type of refund.

Music:

Music must be emailed to our head DJ at his email competition@lvsalsacongress.com . Please bring a backup USB drive with your music to the competition. NO CD’s!!!!!! All music must be email in advance to Head DJ to ensure we run a smooth competition.  Try to make all changes before you send to DJ to avoid confusion by sending multiple version.

Qualifiers:

Previous year top 1st place winners will advance to the finals and the Champions from World Latin Dance Cup, World Salsa Summit and Euroson Lation World Salsa Championship are invite to our competition to have the best of the best.  1st Place Winners will advance straight to the finals on Thursday for the following divisions: Salsa Cabaret Couple, Salsa Couple (Salsa On 1 and Salsa On 2 Combined in our competition), Bachata Cabaret Couple, Female Solo, Male Solo, Bachata Team & Salsa Team
